Chennai Airport Closure due incessant Rains and Flood

Chennai airport remains flooded but the water level is steadily decreasing, providing hope for partial restoration of operations.Action at hand to clear all the FODs (Foreign Objects Danger ) in the first 1500 meters of Runway 25, which is clear of water at present. Although NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has been initiated for airport closure for flight operations till 1200 hours IST of 6th December 2015, AAI is exploring the possibility of making the reduced length of runway available for operations in consultation with stakeholders, especially for small aircraft operations (ATRs / Bombardiers) under Visual Meteorological Conditions.The Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) teams are on the job of evaluation of serviceability of equipment and the feasibility of an early restoration of services. Action plans have been drawn up for replacement of equipment if necessitated. Detailed action plans have been drawn up for evaluation and restoration of Airport Systems, IT infrastructure, facilities inside the terminal buildings and the airside operational area, as appropriate to facilitate an early restoration of all facilities.
AAI Chennai is in close coordination with IAF Tambaram and Indian Naval Station INS Rajali, Arakonam to facilitate airlift by helicopters, from Chennai to Arakonam so that they can be transported onwards to their respective destinations.94 passengers have been airlifted by IAF helicopters from Chennai Airport to Arakonam for onward destination.
