The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested an Enforcement Officer, working in Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), Nagpur (Maharashtra) for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 50,000/- from the complainant.

The case has been registered u/s 7(a) of PC (Amendment) Act, 2018 against the Enforcement Officer on a complaint. The complainant had alleged that his Nagpur based firm was engaged in supply of manpower to different Industries particularly the power industry and was paying contribution towards Provident Fund for its employees regularly to EPFO. The Enforcement Officer visited the firm’s office and asked for various documents for the last 5 years which were provided to him by the complainant. The complainant then visited the EPFO office and met the accused and enquired about his pending PF audit. The accused demanded a bribe of Rs.3,50,000/- at the rate of Rs 50,000/- per year for last 7 years to clear the audit without any hurdles.

When the complainant did not pay any bribe, the Enforcement Officer informed him that he would visit the complainant’s office to discuss and negotiate the bribe amount. Later, the accused reduced the bribe to Rs.3,00,000/-. CBI laid a trap and caught the Enforcement Officer red handed while demanding and accepting Rs.50,000/- as the first installment of the total bribe amount of Rs.3,00,000/- from the complainant. Searches were conducted at his residence and office.

The arrested accused is being produced today before the Special Judge, CBI Cases, Nagpur.
