A big wave of support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi has propelled his Bharatiya Janata Party to an insurmountable lead in assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, setting the stage for the party’s near-domination of politics in India.

Midday counting trends show the BJP leading in 305 of the state’s 403 seats, leaving the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance way behind at 71 seats. The Bahujan Samaj Party, once a dominant power, faces decimation.
